A paper by Prof. Kenji Miyatake et al. of Clean Energy Research Center and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Nanomaterials Center, “Effect of biphenyl groups on the properties of poly(fluorenylidene piperidinium) based anion exchange membranes for applications to water electrolyzers” (https://doi.org/10.1039/d5py00210a), published in Polymer Chemistry by Royal Society of Chemistry, was selected to be featured on the front cover of the journal.
In this paper, a series of quaternized poly(arylene fluorenylidene piperidinium)-based copolymers were synthesized, in which hydrophobic components were optimized to tune the properties as anion exchange membranes. The resulting membranes achieved high performance and durability in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis cells.
Prof. Miyatake commented that the findings are expected to contribute to commercialization of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis cells and that they will continue their research endeavor.
